Ballyfermot Traveller's Action Project
Ballyfermot Traveller's Action Project is a community development organisation and was established in 1999 to address the needs of Travellers in the Ballyfermot area. The organisation is a partnership between Travellers and non-Travellers working to promote the rights of Travellers as a nomadic ethnic group within Irish society. BTAP works from a rights-based approach on areas including accommodation, education and training, building community leadership, challenging racism and discrimination and recognising, validating and celebrating Traveller culture. This work is guided by the principles of starting where people are at, participation and inclusion, empowerment, solidarity not charity, equality and collective action.
In October 2008 women from Ballyfermot Traveller's Action Project took part in a development education project funded by Irish Aid. The aim of the project was to facilitate a Traveller perspective on global development issues. The participants engaged in dialogue and reflection on human development needs in both local and global contexts and the major issues which arose during the reflective processes were those concerning the human need for shelter and access to water. A group of women from BTAP travelled to Ethipia and met women from the communities of Jimma and Ambo and developed relationships based on friendship and a common understanding of each other's lives and the issues affecting them.
An art project was completed subsequently and the work was presented as a gift to the the women of the Women's Development Project, Jimma, Ethiopia.
