The Irish Development Education Association (IDEA) is the national network for Development Education in Ireland and a leading voice for the sector. We represent over 70 members involved in the practice, promotion and advancement of Development Education in formal, non-formal and informal settings. Together we work to strengthen Development Education in Ireland and to raise awareness of the crucial role it has to play in achieving an equal, just and sustainable future.
IDEA's vision is of an equal, just and sustainable world where empathy, solidarity and active citizenship are fostered, and where people are empowered to analyse and challenge the root causes of injustice, poverty and inequality.
IDEA’s mission is to work with our members to promote, support and enhance Development Education throughout the island of Ireland. We will:
- Act as a representative voice of Ireland’s Development Education sector;
- Encourage shared learning and improve standards of practice within the Development Education sector; and
- Act as a catalyst for partnerships and support collaboration within Development Education and beyond.
IDEA grew out of calls from the Development Education sector for an umbrella body to represent them nationally. Since its inception, in 2004, IDEA has been a member-led organisation with members actively engaged in the management and direction of the association.
IDEA has been funded by Irish Aid since 2005 and is one of its strategic partners. IDEA’s programme is also funded by Trócaire and Concern.
IDEA is a company limited by guarantee and was incorporated on the 21st February, 2007. Company registration number 435218. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association, which sets out the objects and powers of the company and IDEA is governed under its articles of association. IDEA operates as a non-profit organisation.
