The Irish Development Education Association (IDEA) is the national network for Development Education in Ireland and a leading voice for the sector. We represent over 70 members involved in the practice, promotion and advancement of Development Education in formal, non-formal and informal settings. Together we work to strengthen Development Education in Ireland and to raise awareness of the crucial role it has to play in achieving an equal, just and sustainable future. IDEA’s 2019-2023 Strategy promotes the essential role of Development Education in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
IDEA's vision is of a world where all people are active global citizens.
IDEA’s mission is to advance and champion global citizenship and sustainable development by supporting and representing our members’ Development Education work.
IDEA grew out of calls from the Development Education sector for an umbrella body to represent them nationally. Since its inception, in 2004, IDEA has been a member-led organisation with members actively engaged in the management and direction of the association.
IDEA has been funded by Irish Aid since 2005 and is one of its strategic partners. IDEA’s programme is also funded by Trócaire and Concern.
IDEA is a company limited by guarantee and was incorporated on the 21st February, 2007. Company registration number 435218. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association, which sets out the objects and powers of the company and IDEA is governed under its articles of association.
