Description of Work in DE

Green Sod Ireland’s ecological programme for secondary schools: “Be Bio Diverse” Green Sod Ireland, a registered national charity, is currently delivering an ecological programme to secondary schools in Galway City. The programme is funded by Irish Aid and supported by World Wise Global Schools. The main aims of this programme are 1) To mainstream our ecological programme into the national curriculum, 2) To promote “Earth-centric” thinking and “ecological literacy” across all sectors, and 3) To encourage people to take a proactive role in the preservation of nature through exploring the importance of biodiversity and sustainable living at a local and global level. The programme addresses development education themes including biodiversity, climate change, environmental degradation, resource depletion, sustainable development, and organic principals. It includes 5 workshops which involve the students in environmental discussions, biodiversity studies on their school grounds, pollinator-friendly planting and a visit to a local ecological centre. Students are encouraged to pass on their biodiversity story which they have uncovered, and the skills which they have acquired, to the rest of the school, encouraging teachers to continue teaching about sustainable lifestyle choices.
