Summer Series: ‘Supporting Student Striking – the role of Development Education’
Start Date: 04/09/2019 End Date: 04/09/2019
Event Location: IDEA office, 6 Gardiner Row, Dublin 1
This training workshop is aimed at Development Education practitioners interested in exploring their practice in relation to student strikes for climate change. At the 2019 IDEA Annual Conference there was a significant focus on young people striking and ‘Fridays for Future’. Many DE practitioners go into school/youth settings to deliver DE and may provide advice to teachers/youth workers about supporting young people in their activism. WorldWise Global Schools (WWGS) and IDEA have come together to create space for DE practitioners to explore this context of young people who are extremely engaged on the issue of climate change and the urgency around it. This workshop will include: exploring opportunities within school structures/curricula to strengthen the student movement; exploring the ‘art of change’ where activists meet political processes; developing ideas to support young people who experience frustration and/or anxiety and want to sustain the energy needed for activism involved; and bringing complementary learning about global justice issues to the activism agenda. The workshop will be facilitated by Dermot O’Brien and run from 10am – 4pm in IDEA offices, 6 Gardiner Row. To register please contact: email@example.com and inform us of any dietary requirements.
