IDEA is the lead agency on a three year EU-funded development education project, together with partners in 6 countries. The Project’s main objective is to engage EU citizens from highly-indebted EU countries to understand the interdependences of local and global justice issues, and to enable them to become active advocates on global justice issues; thereby anchoring development policies despite austerity measures at home.
A key activity of this Project is an international youth-led campaign to contribute to a more just and sustainable world by raising awareness and empowering EU citizens as global development advocates. The Project works primarily with a network of young people from the 6 countries called ‘Young Global Advocates’ (YGAs), through Development Education and Awareness Raising (DEAR) methodologies, who will lead an international campaign based on public engagement and international advocacy.
At an international meeting of the YGAs in Brussels in July 2014 (the “Global Youth Forum”) almost 60 young people representing each country participating in the Project came together to decide on the campaign topic. The field of “cohesion through social economy” was the area that the YGAs chose to work on, and along with Partner organisations are currently defining the specific campaign topic. The campaign will be carried out through public engagement as well as advocacy towards EU and national policy-makers, ensuring that new perspectives on international development (i.e. post MDG) have a distinctively global dimension with a focus on active citizenship.
