IDEA at the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Youth

On 6 May 2026, IDEA appeared before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Youth to discuss the role of Development Education, Global Citizenship Education (GCE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Ireland. This cross-party Oireachtas committee comprises TDs and Senators from across the political spectrum, including independent members. The appearance formed part of IDEA's growing policy and advocacy work, aimed at strengthening political understanding and support for Global Citizenship Education across Ireland.
Representing IDEA were CEO Ruairí McKiernan and Leigh Brady, Policy and Advocacy Manager.
The discussion took place against a backdrop of growing global uncertainty, with IDEA highlighting the need for education that equips people not only with knowledge but with the skills to think critically, understand complexity and participate actively in shaping a fairer and more sustainable world. As Ruairí McKiernan told the Committee:
"What is required is a more holistic approach – one that fosters critical thinking, helps people understand global challenges, and supports informed action."
Drawing on the experience of IDEA's network of more than 100 organisations and individuals working to advance GCE and ESD across the island of Ireland, the opening statement acknowledged Ireland's strong policy commitments in this area while calling for greater ambition in implementation. Key recommendations included stronger cross-government coordination, increased investment, deeper embedding of GCE and ESD within formal and non-formal education settings, and enhanced partnerships between government, civil society and education stakeholders.
The engagement was well received by Committee members and helped strengthen parliamentary support for Global Citizenship Education. Following the meeting, several additional TDs and Senators committed to becoming GCE Champions, joining IDEA's growing network of more than 50 Oireachtas members who have pledged to champion and support Global Citizenship Education.
In closing, McKiernan reminded the Committee that:
"This is not a time for backsliding – it is a time for vision, leadership and renewed ambition: to invest in humanity, and in education that fosters respect, counters division, and plants the seeds of hope."
