Speakers

Keynote: Prof. Richard Wilkinson

Richard is Professor Emeritus of Social Epidemiology at the University of Nottingham Medical School, Honorary Professor at University College London and Visiting Professor at the University of York.  With a background in economics and epidemiology, his books and research papers have drawn attention to the tendency for societies with bigger income differences between rich and poor to suffer a heavier burden of health and social problems. He and Kate Pickett co-wrote The Spirit Level (2009) and The Inner Level (2018). Two of his books have been the subject of documentary films – The Great Leveller (for the Channel 4 TV’s Equinox series broadcast in 1996) was based on his Unhealthy Societies, and The Divide (based on The Spirit Level) was released in April 2016 (available on Netflix).

Mary is Advocacy Director, CBM Global, with 10 years with CBM as senior advisor on disability and gender equality and other roles.  She also has a PhD in Disability Law and Public Policy and has experience of working with the UNDP, UN Women and EU Devco. Mary has provided training in disability inclusion to a vast array of stakeholders including NGOs, government staff, educators and academics. She will also be co-facilitating the Workshop on An Introduction to Disability in Development Education, with Louise Talbot-Beirne.

Conference: Charo Lanao

Charo has extensive experience in facilitation, training, consulting as a speaker and coach in over 15 countries around the world. Through her work, she supports individuals and organizations to imagine possibilities, hold intentions and commitments and adapt, with creativity and flexibility to uncertainty. Charo encourages people and organisations to develop their self-awareness, understand what is their purpose, feel the importance of their work and believe in their own potential. She is also an an AtinchikICA and Art of Hosting facilitator to understand how we create together.

Workshop: Nura Hagi

Nura has a MA in Global Ethics, UCC. She is a representative on the Government Oversight Group of the 3rd Irish National Action Plan of Women Peace and Security, as well as a part-time lecturer at UCC on the adult education course: Development and Global Human Rights.

Arran is Director of Head, Heart & Hands Ltd, co-founder of the Mind the Gap programme. Arran has over 15 years experience of facilitating Development Education for schools and youth settings, and is also working part-time as Development Education Officer for Self Help Africa.

Workshop: Michael McCabe

Michael is a performer, theatre director, movement choreographer, facilitator and arts therapist. He is a graduate of the prestigious Ecole Internationale de Theatre Jacques Lecoq, Paris, France, and The Gaiety School of Acting, Dublin, Ireland. He has directed theatre work in the HSE, the Dyspraxia Association of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, St. Michael’s house, and with other special needs organisations and schools with a focus on developing the potential of theatre for working with diverse groups.

Workshop: Sandra Gojić 

Sandra is an embodiment trainer with a background in psychology and youth work. She is passionate about introducing the body in the learning process and understanding how places that we inhabit shape our identities and our perception of the world. Her journey through different countries and movement practices was one of compassion, kindness and learning to trust herself and others. She uses this experience and knowledge to support others to find their voice, inner power and a unique way of being.

Workshop: Peadar King

Peadar has worked as a documentary filmmaker and non-fiction writer for the past two decades. He has presented and produced the RTE global affairs series What in the World? and his latest book is War, Suffering and the Struggle for Human Rights (2020). He is currently Adjunct Professor of international relations in UCC and is currently co-editing an anthology The Art of Place: People and Landscape of Co. Clare due out this autumn. He has a background in teaching (Ennis Vocational School and Shannon Comprehensive School, curriculum development and teacher training, (Curriculum Development Centre Shannon and the Gender Equality Unit, Department of Education).
