What to learn NOW for the Future We Want

IDEA's Annual Conference will take place on June 13th in Wynn's Hotel, Abbey Street, Dublin 1

  • Friday 13th June 2014, 9:30am -4pm
  • Registration opens May 12th

This year, IDEA's Annual Conference asks everyone to consider what we should be learning NOW to create a more just and sustainable future for everyone. Development Education is about enabling people to critically engage and to act to create the world they want.

What do YOU think?

Ahead of the conference, IDEA wishes to engage the Irish public in conversation around the question of education for a more just and sustainable world. We are asking you:

What should we, in Ireland, learn NOW to create the future we want?
Education plays a key role in facilitating widespread change. What should we be learning NOW to ensure our planet remains healthy and safe, to create the best possible societies for our children, and to give the human race a chance of not just surviving but thriving for generations to come.

  • What should our education system be focused on now?
  • What should our schools be teaching?
  • What new subjects should be available?
  • What should future teachers be learning to be able to meet the needs of children born today?
  • What can universities do now to equip their students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to survive and thrive?
  • How should we educate future political, business, spiritual leaders?

The objective of this campaign is stimulate widespread public debate about the role of education in creating a more just and sustainable world. We want to hear what people think we should be learning NOW to create a better future for everyone. We want the conversation to surface varying perspectives; conservative to radical, right to left, specific to broad. The conversation will be open, shared and accessible for everyone. We will collect your opinions and responses and display them at our conference and create a report that shares them all.

Anyone who engages in the campaign will be invited to come to the conference for face-to-face conversation and an opportunity to engage with others who care about learning now to create teh future we want.

IDEA is looking for a video production company/ animator for an upcoming video project. We have funding available to create a short animated educational video resource for members as part of The Code of Good Practice. The video will help viewers understand what quality GCE is and why it matters in the world today. The intended audience for the video are people who are connected to the Code of Good Practice and GCE in their work but not yet very familiar with it e.g. non-GCE staff in member organisations, board members of member organisations, teachers, youth workers, European partners, new members to the Code and new staff to IDEA member organisations. Please submit your CV and a short letter of interest outlining a proposal for the video (including the number of days you envisage and the fee) to code@ideaonline.ie. The deadline for application is Wednesday, 30 July 05pm. Click here for the full terms of reference.

In June, a delegation from our Erasmus+ partner organisation LAPAS (Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation) visited Dublin for a two-day learning and exchange visit hosted by IDEA. The visit was part of an ongoing collaboration with LAPAS to strengthen quality global citizenship education (GCE) in Ireland and Latvia, using the IDEA Code of Good Practice as a framework. You can find out more about the Erasmus+ project here.
