This webinar explores the concept of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions how they are used and how they can be an effective action to take as part of the educational process.


Tying in with IDEA’s work on Apartheid Free Zones, we will explore this action component of GCE, celebrating the significant impact and the challenges of these three actions from local to global.


This webinar will give you the information, the tools and the hope necessary to explore these actions with the communities you work with.

Speakers


Vicky Donnelly is the outreach and education worker with Financial Justice Ireland where her work involves exploring and questioning dominant narratives about growth and 'development', and imagining more just, sustainable alternatives. She designs and delivers Global Justice workshops with schools, universities, youth and community groups and service-providers around Ireland, and has a particular interest in anti-racism perspectives, and creative and participatory methodologies. 

Giorgia Gusciglio is Europe Co-Coordinator for BDS Campaigns at the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition of Palestinian society leading the global BDS movement. In her role, she supports movement building and campaign efforts of partners (grassroots collectives, civil society, trade unions, activists groups) part of the BDS movement in Europe, focusing specifically on North and East Europe. She has been a BDS activist since 2021 and before that, she was involved in different collectives of pro-Palestinian solidarity in Italy. Giorgia has a backround in Political Science, Sociology and the SWANA region. Before joining the BNC, she supported communication efforts as part of the team of different membership-based civil society organisations at the European level on social rights, just transition, civic space and education.  

Emma Jayne Geraghty Head of Movement Building at Friends of the Earth Ireland, is a trainer, facilitator and a professional community development & youth worker with more than a decade of experience working in the climate justice movement. She is passionate about creating the necessary conditions that center and support young people and communities that have been marginalised by systemic injustices and or are facing the frontlines of climate change impacts to play a central role in the feminist just energy transition. She has led and implemented innovative projects for climate justice, youth education and empowerment, human rights and Traveller & Roma rights in Ireland, at an EU level and internationally. 

Moderator

Ruairí McKiernan is the CEO of IDEA, the Irish Development Education Association.  His activism has spanned various causes, including anti-war campaigns, environmental protection, mental health reform, and gender-based violence. Ruairí’s international experience includes youth development work in Tanzania, and he recently returned from living in Australia, where he focused on Indigenous rights and advocated for reform of the gambling industry.  Ruairí is also a regular media contributor, a published non-fiction author, and the host of a popular social change podcast, Love and Courage. Ruairí is the founder and former CEO of the pioneering national youth organisation Spunout. He served on the Council of State for seven years as one of President Michael D. Higgins's appointees. He was part of the founding team behind Uplift, the digital campaigning organisation, and established Change Innovations, a social impact consultancy. He has held leadership roles with the refugee and migrant rights organisation Doras and the global empathy education charity Narrative 4. He has also worked closely with the peace and justice group Afri on development education, public engagement, and campaigning for many years.
